What is NMN?
NMN stands for Nicotinamide Mononucleotide – a bioactive Vitamin B3 variant. It is a molecule consisting of nicotinamide (a form of Vitamin B3), a sugar (ribose), and a phosphate group. Chemically, NMN belongs to the group of nucleotides, which are also the building blocks of DNA and RNA. NMN is a naturally occurring substance in all living cells and plays a role in cellular metabolism, particularly as an intermediate in the biosynthesis or precursor of NAD⁺ (Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide), an important coenzyme in biological processes.
NAD, whose levels in organisms decrease over the years, is involved in numerous cellular processes. For years, NMN has been scientifically investigated worldwide with increasing intensity. The substance is chemically closely related to NR (Nicotinamide Riboside), another NAD⁺ precursor.
Areas of Application
NMN (Nicotinamide Mononucleotide) is a chemical intermediate that plays a role in the synthesis of Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide – NAD for short. In its pure powder form, NMN is classified as a laboratory reagent and falls under the category of substances that may only be used for scientific and research purposes.
According to current regulations in Germany and the European Union, NMN is legally considered a chemical that is not approved for human consumption. Its use in food, dietary supplements, or cosmetic products is therefore not permitted. Its use is limited to professional applications – particularly laboratory examinations, analytical procedures, and applications in biochemical research. Its distribution and use are subject to the general regulations for laboratory chemicals in the life science sector.
Important notes
- In Germany and the EU, NMN is legally classified as a chemical and is not approved for human consumption; it is intended only for technical and scientific purposes, not for food, supplement, or medicinal applications.
